Cleaning and maintenance
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Twice a year for most homes. Three or four times where there is heavy tree cover, especially pine.
Do I still need cleaning with gutter guards?
Less often, but yes. Fine grit and shingle granules get through every guard on the market.
What is the best time of year?
After autumn leaf fall, and again in spring. In snow regions, before the first hard freeze.
Repairs and problems
My gutter overflows even though it is clean. Why?
Usually pitch or capacity. A gutter that has sagged flat holds water instead of moving it, and an undersized system overflows in heavy rain no matter how clean it is.
My gutter is pulling away from the house.
Almost always because the fascia board behind it has softened with water damage. Re-fastening into rotten timber fails again within a season, so the board is dealt with first.
Can you stop ice dams?
Not with gutters or guards alone. Ice dams are caused by heat escaping the roof and melting snow that refreezes at the eave — an insulation and ventilation problem. We can reduce the debris that worsens it and repair the damage it causes.
