The problem

Gutter guards are the most oversold product in this trade. A screen that handles oak leaves perfectly will pass pine needles straight through and then trap them where you cannot reach. Foam inserts hold moisture and grow debris into a mat. Reverse-curve systems shed leaves well and overshoot in heavy rain if they are pitched wrong. The guard is not the decision — matching the guard to your debris, your rainfall and your roof pitch is.

Our process

How gutter guards & leaf filters works

  1. 1

    Identify your debris

Needles, broadleaf, seed pods, shingle grit and blossom all behave differently. We look at what is actually landing on your roof.

  2. 2

    Clean and repair first

Guards go onto a clean, sound, correctly pitched gutter. Fitting over an existing problem hides it rather than solving it.

  3. 3

    Match the product

We recommend the guard type that suits your debris and rainfall, and we will tell you when guards are not worth it for your property.

  4. 4

Fit without voiding your roof warranty

Fitted so shingles are not lifted or penetrated where the manufacturer prohibits it.

Why us

What to expect from your contractor

Honest comparison

Contractors who fit several guard types have no reason to push one. You should get the trade-offs, including the downsides.

No roof warranty problems

Fixing methods that lift or penetrate shingles can void a roof warranty. Check how the guard attaches before agreeing to it.

Realistic expectations

No guard is maintenance-free. Anyone promising you will never clean your gutters again is overselling.

Answers

Gutter Guards & Leaf Filters — common questions

Do gutter guards actually work?
Good ones, correctly matched and correctly fitted, remove most of the cleaning burden. None of them eliminate it. Any company promising you will never clean your gutters again is overselling — fine grit and shingle granules get through every system on the market.
Which gutter guard is best for pine needles?
Micro-mesh, effectively without exception. Needles slide straight through screens and slot guards and then pack into the trough where they are much harder to remove than they would have been without any guard at all.
Will guards prevent ice dams?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Ice dams are caused by heat escaping through the roof and melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. That is an insulation and ventilation problem. Guards can reduce the debris that worsens it, but they do not address the cause.
Can guards be fitted to my existing gutters?
In most cases yes, provided the gutters are sound and correctly pitched. If the run sags or leaks, that gets put right first — otherwise you are fitting a guard over a problem you can no longer see.
