How to read these figures. These are typical national ranges for professionally installed work, not quotes. Regional labour rates, access, roof height and pitch, and the condition of the fascia behind the gutter all move the final number. Anyone quoting a firm price without seeing the property is guessing.
Gutter repair cost
Repair pricing is driven by what failed and how much of the run is affected. A single seam is an hour’s work; a run that has sagged along its whole length needs taking down and re-hanging.
| Job | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single seam or joint leak | $150 – $300 | Strip, clean and re-seal the failed joint, flow test |
| Re-secure sagging section | $200 – $450 | New hangers, corrected fall on the affected span |
| Re-hang full run | $300 – $900 | Take down, replace hangers, re-pitch and re-seal a complete run |
| Replace damaged section | $200 – $600 | Cut out and replace a damaged length, matched and sealed |
| Re-attach gutter pulled from fascia | $250 – $700 | Re-fasten into sound timber; excludes fascia repair |
| Emergency make-safe visit | $200 – $600 | Secure or remove hanging sections, document for insurance |
Gutter cleaning cost
Cleaning is priced on roof length, storeys and access. Beware quotes that sound cheap and turn out to be a leaf blower run along the top without touching the downspouts.
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-storey, average home | $120 – $250 | Hand-cleared, downspouts flushed, flow tested |
| Two-storey home | $200 – $450 | Additional access equipment and time |
| Large or steeply pitched roof | $300 – $600 | Roof area and pitch both increase time and risk |
| First clean after several years | +$50 – $150 | Heavy compacted build-up, quoted before starting |
| Blocked downspout clearing | $75 – $200 | Per downspout where the blockage is below the outlet |
Gutter installation cost per foot
Installation is quoted per linear foot of gutter, with downspouts usually priced separately. Material is the main driver.
| Material | Per linear foot installed | Service life |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl / PVC | $4 – $9 | 10 – 20 years |
| Aluminum (seamless, standard gauge) | $8 – $16 | 20 – 30 years |
| Galvanized steel | $12 – $22 | 20 – 25 years |
| Copper | $28 – $55+ | 50 – 100 years |
| Downspouts (each, standard drop) | $60 – $180 | Matched to gutter material |
As a rough guide, an average single-family home carries roughly 150 to 200 feet of gutter, which puts a typical seamless aluminum replacement somewhere between $1,400 and $3,200 before any fascia work.
Gutter guards cost
| Guard type | Per linear foot installed | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Foam insert | $3 – $6 | Low-debris sites; holds moisture, shortest life |
| Screen / mesh | $4 – $9 | Broadleaf debris; passes pine needles |
| Micro-mesh | $9 – $20 | Pine needles, shingle grit, fine debris |
| Reverse curve | $10 – $20 | Heavy leaf fall; can overshoot in intense rain |
What drives the price up
- Height and access — Second and third storey work, restricted side returns, conservatories and steep ground all change the equipment and the time.
- Hidden fascia rot — Found once the gutter comes off. It has to be dealt with before a new system goes on, and it is the most common reason a quote changes.
- Roof pitch and covering — Steep or fragile coverings need roof ladders and staging rather than simple ladder access.
- System type — Box, built-in and internal gutters are specialist work. Copper is both a material and a skill premium.
- Underground drain lines — A blocked buried line is a separate job from clearing the downspout above it.
What a fair quote should include
A written scope naming the work and the materials; the linear footage and downspout count; who removes and disposes of the old system; whether fascia inspection is included; the workmanship and material warranty terms; and confirmation of licensing and insurance. If a quote is a single number on a card, ask for it in writing.
