The problem

The gutter collects the water; the downspout is what actually removes it. A blocked, crushed, undersized or disconnected downspout backs the whole system up, and a downspout that discharges right at the wall simply relocates the problem — concentrating the entire roof’s runoff into the soil against your foundation, which is precisely where you least want it.

Downspout Repair & Installation — common questions

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?
Four to six feet is the usual minimum, and further on clay soils or where the ground slopes back toward the house. The aim is to get roof runoff past the backfill zone around the foundation.
How many downspouts do I need?
A common rule of thumb is one downspout per 30 to 40 feet of gutter run, but roof area, pitch and local rainfall intensity all move that number. Large or steep roof planes frequently need more than the house was originally built with.
My downspout is clogged underground. Can you clear it?
Often yes. Buried lines need to be located and cleared differently from an above-ground run, so we assess it first and quote that work separately rather than guessing.
Can downspouts be moved to a better location?
Usually. Relocating an outlet is straightforward on most systems and is often the right answer when the current discharge point is causing pooling, icing on a walkway, or erosion.
