Gutter Repair — common questions

How do I know if my gutters need repair or full replacement?
If the trough itself is sound and the problem is pitch, hangers, seams or a damaged section, repair is almost always the better value. Replacement makes sense when the metal is widely rusted or corroded, when a sectional system is leaking at most of its joints, or when the gutter is badly undersized for the roof area it drains.
Why does my gutter overflow even though it is clean?
Usually pitch or capacity. A gutter needs a consistent fall toward the downspout; if it has sagged flat or backward, water sits and spills over the front edge. The other common cause is an undersized system — a large or steep roof plane feeding a 5-inch gutter with one downspout will overflow in heavy rain no matter how clean it is.
Can you repair a gutter that has pulled away from the house?
Yes, and it is one of the most common calls we take. The important part is checking the fascia board behind it. Gutters usually pull away because the wood they are fastened to has softened with water damage — fastening back into rotten fascia will fail again within a season, so the board needs repair or replacement first.
How long does a typical repair take?
Most single-point repairs are done in one visit of one to three hours. Re-hanging a full run or repairing fascia alongside the gutter can take most of a day.
